Geography Intent

At Heage Primary School, we want our children to be curious about the world and confident in their place within it.

Our Geography curriculum begins with what is familiar to our children. From the Early Years, children explore their environment and own experiences, they begin to build a greater understanding of the world around them. We build their understanding progressively towards the local area, the United Kingdom and then, the wider world.

Through exploring places, people and environments, children develop a rich body of geographical knowledge alongside the skills to question, investigate, observe, map, compare and make connections. We want children to understand not only where places are, but what makes them special, how they are connected and how they change over time.

Geography provides opportunities for children to show kindness and compassion towards people and communities, respect different cultures and environments, demonstrate resilience when tackling geographical challenges, use honesty when interpreting and presenting information, and develop teamwork through enquiry, fieldwork and enrichment opportunities.

We want every child to leave Heage with a sense of wonder about the world, respect for its people and environments, and an understanding that they have a role to play in caring for the world they share with others.

We want our children to look closely, ask questions, care deeply and understand their place in our world.
