History Intent

At Heage Primary School, we want children to develop a curiosity about the past and an understanding of how it has shaped the world we live in today. From the Early Years, children begin by exploring their own personal history before developing their understanding of the history of Heage and Derbyshire, the United Kingdom and the wider world.

Through carefully sequenced learning, children develop their chronological understanding and learn to question, investigate and interpret evidence, making connections between people, events, changes and societies. We want children to think like historians and understand that history is not simply a collection of facts, but something to be explored and questioned.

We develop respect, kindness and compassion by exploring the experiences of people in the past, resilience and honesty through historical enquiry and evidence, and teamwork through discussion and investigation.

We want our children to leave Heage with a love of history, a strong sense of their local heritage and the confidence to question, explore and learn from the past.
