Learning

Developing an exciting and engaging curriculum that brings learning alive and helps children to be motivated and have a thirst for learning is very important to us.  We want children to develop a range of different intelligences and skills which will equip them to achieve well throughout their lives.

English

Reading

Being a confident reader is a vital and fundamental skill needed by all.  We really want all pupils to develop a love for reading and an enjoyment of books.  Using funding from the Foyle Foundation we have created a fantastic library area, this has now moved to the Studio.  We have started planning from a new scheme of work (September 2017) called Focus English.  This helps teacher plan and deliver English in a purposeful and engaging way, placing English and literature at the heart of the curriculum and is aligned with end of year expectations.  The curriculum is based on the use of high-quality texts, including poetry, which provide the driver for the unit. Across each year group, texts from classic and current authors have been selected to ensure that pupils experience a wide and rich reading curriculum to promote a life-long love of reading.

Phonics

In KS1/Foundation the children have a daily phonics session for 30 minutes (Mon - Thurs) and are streamed into ability groups across the three classes.  Teaching assistants and teachers take responsibility for taking these groups and the school follows the Letters and Sounds  scheme.

VLE

Remote Learning Plan  - Information for parents

Our school VLE (virtual learning environment) is a personalised area on the internet for pupils, teachers, parents and carers. It is an online space where pupils can access a wide range of learning resources —anytime, anywhere to support their learning.

Our VLE is called DB Primary.

Our  VLE is designed to help pupils learn at home both independently and in partnership with their parents. It is also designed to provide blended learning during the COVID19 crisis.

Online learning resources may include maths, spelling and computing activities, or forums for discussions and collaboration.

Our Virtual Learning Environment will enable pupils to:

  • Access learning materials created by their teachers and others outside lesson time and from any location
  • Store work and notes online for use in homework and revision
  • Work at their own pace and with a wider choice of learning styles
  • Improve their ICT skills and online management
  • Participate in live discussions and forums with other students and teachers (KS2)

Our Virtual Learning Environment will enable parents and carers to:

  • Support children with learning which takes place outside school
  • Access their child's personal home page to keep track of their work and the curriculum
  • Engage with wider school issues through online communication tools
  • Become active partners with the school

If you do not have a computer with internet access, please let your child’s teacher know. Some activities added to the VLE can be made available as a paper copy.

Please note that DB Primary does not filter the internet. You need to have your own internet firewall and parental controls set up.

You will need a password to access the wealth of information on the DB Primary site, if you do not have a password please speak to the school office.
